Abstract

One of the great challenges in Brazilian buildings is the development of solutions capable of isolating noise and promoting acoustic comfort to users. The impact noise consists of the energy of the mechanical excitation of rigid surfaces, being transmitted by solid medium. Concretes and mortars are dense and highly rigid materials, these properties provide an increase in the speed of propagation of the sound wave, being common the use of light and flexible materials for the isolation of impact noise. Within this context, in this work, the behavior of mortars with partial replacement of sand by vermiculite and rubber powder was analyzed using the ultrasound technique. The reference mortar presented an average propagation velocity of 3978.67 m/s, while the mortar containing 30% of sand replacement by vermiculite presented an average propagation velocity of 3675.33 m/s and with the same percentage of rubber at mortar showed an average propagation speed of 2672.83 m/s. It was found that mortars containing rubber powder promoted a lower speed of propagation of the sound wave compared to mortars containing an equivalent percentage of vermiculite, which contributes to sustainability, since the rubber used is a waste and vermiculite a mineral of natural origin.
