Abstract

With people quarantined at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of Belém experienced in 2020 a sound environment that will likely only reach Brazilian capitals in 50 years, when there could be fewer industrial sounds as we know them today. The 75 dB(A) that reached the residential area of the Cremação neighborhood, at the beginning of the pandemic, reduced to 60 dB(A) at its peak in May 2020. This 15 dB less in the environment revealed human and natural sound elements that were masked by urban noise. This investigation contributes to a better understanding of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sound environment of Belém, during quarantine and lockdown. For 120 days, always at 9:00 am, vehicle counts, sound measurements, and observations of the audible sounds were carried out. The results show that there was a variation in sound levels, congruent with the quarantine and lockdown periods. Much more than a physical change, with the quieter environment at the peak of the pandemic, it was possible to perceive a social change from the diversity of human, natural, and industrial sounds, generated both inside the residences and in the surrounding blocks through a marked change of the perceived sound, revealing an overall better sound quality.
