Abstract

The present study aims to present proposals to mitigate urban traffic noise levels for the city center of Caxias do Sul/Brazil, which presented noise levels above the recommended by ABNT NBR 10151:2019. The data and the analysis of the results of the noise map of the area are portrayed in another study presented by the authors at this congress. The standard on road noise assessment is not within the scope of the standard, but it was used in the study due to the lack of another reference document of a Brazilian character. The method used in this article was a literature review relevant to the subject. Particularities of urban morphology, such as sharp variations in topographic levels and the existence of building barriers, have a strong impact on reducing dissipation and increasing noise levels in the region. The lack of corrective or preventive measures to mitigate the impact caused by vehicular traffic, the main source of noise activity in urban areas, causes the areas bordering the streets of the central neighborhood to reach noise levels above those recommended by the control standards and by the WHO. In addition, the performance of building sealing systems may be undersized to maintain an internal sound comfort level recommended by ABNT NBR 10152:2017. In this way, proposals for guidelines for urban planning in the region are presented, to mitigate the acoustic problem in the region and plan the area for future situations.
